Antique Silver card cases description:
A small thin box, usually having a hinged lid, for holding visiting cards.
Antique Silver card cases history:
There are very few examples of silver card cases made before the 1830s. The vast majority were made in the Victorian period. They were still made in the early 20th century but in much smaller numbers.
Antique Silver card cases design:
The vast majority were rectangular and were often engraved, embossed, or chased. They were used regularly and on view in various social situations. So they were often designed to impress. Therefore silversmiths were asked to create more and more impressive designs including chased, embossed or engraved scenes of notable landmarks and views.
Antique Silver card cases collectors note:
The level of craftsmanship and their aesthetic qualities determine their value. Unusual scenes command the highest prices, i.e. St. Pauls Cathedral, Crystal Palace, Houses of Parliament. But they must also be undamaged with good clear hallmarks, crisp detail, and well-fitting lids/hinges.
